The Scientific High School of San Giorgio a Cremano was born in 1987 as a detached section of the Liceo Scientifico of S. Sebastiano al Vesuvio. It became autonomous in September 2000.The High School is named after "Carlo Urbani", in memory of the Italian doctor and researcher who identified the Sars syndrome and obtained the Nobel Peace prize in 1999. The scientist died on March 29, 2003 in Bangkok, infected by the same disease he had studied and fought. John Paul II wrote of him: "A doctor worthy of esteem died, who spent his life to soothe the pain of his neediest brothers".
